Galvanized wire for parrot cage?
I want to build a large cage with galvanized wire for my parrot (it’s the only thing I can find). I’ve read that galvanized wire has zinc which is toxic to birds but I have also read that virtually all bird breeders use it anyway. Is it safe to use galvanized wire for my parrots cage?
I have a sun conure.
The short and sweet answer is “No!”
The zinc coating is toxic and has killed many birds! It is true that some people use it after cleaning with vinegar. But as has been mentioned, they have to go back and re-clean it often. If you forget, it could mean your bird’s very life! For me, its not worth the risk!
In addition you should be aware that if you have a large Parrot, he can bite through wire like it is soft cheese! My medium sized Quaker Parrot has bitten through a stainless steel water bowl three times! And I mean real bites, not simply put a pin hole through it! I advise that you not try to cut corners here. Large Parrot cages are often built with one quarter inch steel rods for a very good reason!
Look in the phone book under “Metals” and find a place that deals in steel. Then draw your blueprint, get the tools you will need, and go buy the steel rods. A steel supplier might even be able to get steel wire that is thicker than what you can find at a hardware store.
Better yet, simply advertise for a used parrot cage! But don’t use cheap, small, toxic galvanized wire unless you are prepared to risk your bird’s life.
