Can nonsporting/lap dogs be hunting and/or guarding dogs?

I have a bichon frise miniature poodle mix female and she seems to be a very good hunting/watch dog.

She’s always been good at being lookout and I’ve never had any problem getting her to cool down (I’ve trained her thoroughly with methods from police dog handlers I know), just recently I’ve found that she responds well to ‘go get ‘em’ in the case that she chases after ducks, tree birds, and squirrels really good. I have ducks in the lake near my house that she goes after on command.

So I’m wondering, can I go get her specifically trained as a hunting dog and enter her in the sport? Same for guarding? Or do these sports not allow medium dogs? (She’s about 14 inches tall on all fours, weight is somewhere around 11 pounds)

If you can manage it, any dog can be trained for any activity in which they excel. There is certainly nothing wrong with attempting something new with your dog if you think they have what it takes.

However, when it comes to actual competitions, such as field trials or protection sports, you wouldn’t be able to compete with your dog. These competitions are mostly limited to certain purebreds; typically breeds designed for that specific purpose.

Most dogs will chase small animals; this behavior is linked to prey drive, one of the dog’s most basic instincts. A good hunting dog has to have a prey drive, a good nose & a lot of desire to hunt using her nose….chasing after ducks she can see doesn’t quite count You never know what she’s capable of until you give her a chance to try- however, it’s also not worth getting your hopes up too high until you actually test her instinct in a more realistic situation. Talk to some hunting trainers & so forth, see what you can arrange- if you really want to try her out, don’t let anybody discourage you! (People will be skeptical, understandably….and some of the good ol’ boy hunting dog folks will flat out laugh at you, lol….) You’ll find somebody willing to give you a chance if you want to try bad enough. Heck, if you live anywhere near South Dakota I’ll gladly plant a few birds for her myself and see what she’s got.
