Do You Think My Hyacinth & Greenwing Macaws Are Happy? I Know Captivity Must Be Horrible…?
But I am trying to give them the very best life possible.
I rehomed both of them. Vollkommen, my Hyacinth, is a “retired breeder bird”. I got him at age seven.
Sonnenbar “Zo-nen-bear”, my Greenwing…is five-six years old and a rehome.
I can’t let them free flight outside. It’s not possible whatsoever.
I feel so guilty about that and there’s not enough space inside to do free flights.
They both have huge cages, tons of tons, wonderful prepared food, ect. None are pluckers (anymore!) and they both spend three-five hours out of the cage daily.
Sometimes I wonder how I can make their live’s better. Money is not an issue so if you have an elaborate ideas feel free to tell me. I don’t think that Macaws can even be happy in Zoos.
bless you for being so realistic about your birds! I can only wish more large bird owners where half as sensible as you. You are right, captivity is no great life for most parrots. However, if we realise that we can try to provide for them the best we can. Do your two get along ok? If they do, thats a great bonus. I know they are different species, but macaws are VERY social birds so even having another large bird around is very comforting to them. If money really is no object, why not go completely cageless? You could easily adapt a spare bedroom as a bird room, bird proof it and but tree stands, toys from the cieling etc. Then they can be loose in thier room even when you can’t supervise. Have you thought about making an outdoor cage for them when the wheather is nice? Your birds are large enough that you could use pre-made outdoor dog runs. Even though they wouldn’t be big enough to fly the birds would still enjoy the change in scenery, and sunlight is very good for them. Other ideas- if you could train them to come when called, if you know anyone that own a large pole barn or indoor arena you could take them for “flight time” as often as possible. Also, they make bird-harnesses (also called flight suits) so you could take them on outings every now and then. Look into making your own bird toys so they can have a constant supply of new toys (untreated 2 by 4′s are supposed to work nicely). Also, think outside of the box! Many things you wouldn’t think of as “toys” are wonderful. I’m sure there are some kids toys that the macaws would appreciate, and you can get baskets and straw or vine wreaths for shredding at craft stores. I’m sure old phone books and boxes are great fun too. Also remember to mix up thier diet- big birds like macaws love to eat whatever you are having, so just set aside a little of your dinner for the parrot bowls every night. Also, you probably know this, but Hyacynths need palm nuts or macadamias added pretty regularly. And try offering foods in different ways- my budgie, for instance, loves it when I hang whole lettuce leaves in his cage (even though most people would be inclined to chop them for birds) and I just got a suet feeder and stuffed it with hay for him, which he thinks is a hoot. If you can find a sturdy enough type of “cage” you can put fresh fruits and veggies in it and hang it for your parrots to figuire out. Or alot of parrots enjoy veggie kabobs- strung on a safe skewer and hung from the cage. They also make “puzzle” toys for large parrots, where you put food or nuts in a container and then it ties or twist or locks shut and the parrots have to figuire out how to open the container to get the food. Many birds also enjoy knots.
Rotating toys often is great, but its also important to find a variety of different types of toys- puzzle toys, food toys, shreddable toys, chew toys, sound toys, rope toys, climbing toys etc, etc. Another thought is the TV- do you leave it on for your birds when you are away? Tuning it to a “safe” channel like cartoons or even better, animal planet, can keep them occupied while you are gone and cater to thier social needs. Hope that was somewhat helpful. -Neb

Plucker Embedding $79.66 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In mathematics, the Plucker embedding describes a method to realize the Grassmannian of all kdimensional subspaces of a vector space V, as a subvariety of the projective space of the kth exterior power of that vector space, The Plucker embedding was first defined, in the case k = 2, n = 4, in coordinates by Julius Plucker as a way of describing the lines in three dimensional space (which, as projective lines in real projective space, correspond to two dimensional subspaces of a four dimensional vector space). This was generalized by Hermann Grassmann to arbitrary k and n using a generalization of Pluckers coordinates, sometimes called Grassmann coordinates Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F.
