does this sound right for my pigeon mr squeaky?

I have a baby pigeon as you all know i would get. hes approximately 10 days old, he still has all yellow feathers, and hes a big fat guy. he has tiny feathers growing. I am EXTREMELY responsible to feed him, love him, ext. What I`ve been feeding him, is milk, and water, mixed with bread, look warm water of course. what im using to feed him is an eyedropper. He eats like a bear! is there anything else he needs? and i saw a video of a baby pigeon being fed with this tube like thing, it reminded me of a penny holder, you know like its round and long. Does anyone know what that is called?

Please immediately discontinue the milk – pigeons can’t digest it. Also the bread is not enough for him to grow on. If he’s ten days old and growing his feathers then he needs a lot more protein (I’ve hand raised many hundreds of pigeons). If you don’t have anything else in the house right now, then start using dry dog or cat food. You can do exactly the same thing you’re doing with the bread, just use the dry food instead (obviously make sure it’s softened with the water etc., in the same way.)

Don’t try to tube the bird with a syringe unless you have a bit more experience. If you’ve gotten him to ten days, you’re doing well already. He also needs a calcium source – the milk was helping with that, but again,pigeons don’t have lactase and milk doesn’t do good things for them.

I have put a link to an emergency feeding site below that explains tubing if you want to do it. If you can get to a pet store, just ask them for the stuff they use to handfeed baby parrots, etc. and use that. It’s good. It’s also easy to mix with water and feed the kid with.

When you wean the kid, put the grain – use pigeon feed – on a flat table at first. the roundness of the seed sets off the pecking instinct.

You can also get lots of help from folks at the Pigeon Talk Forum (http://www.pigeons.biz) Many of them have hand reared young birds.
