Ringneck with really long toenails?
My 15 year old male ringneck constantly has really long toenails. We only clip them when absolutely necessary, because it’s really traumatizing for him… But even when we clip them, a week or two later they have grown again and are just as sharp and long as before.
I recently bought him a cement perch which is supposed to help file the nails, but he isn’t the kind of bird that “plays around” – He just sits on his perch and talks, so the perch isn’t doing much for his nails.
Is there any other kind of tool I can use that will help file his toenails? I’ve never had this problem with any other parakeets I’ve had.
Thanks. I’ve bred birds for the last 15 years (got rid of them when I moved and just kept my ringneck) and he was just vet checked and had blood drawn and was said to be in good health. I am going to try the pumice perch and maybe use a small dremel… I find it very unpleasant to have him on my hand/shoulder when his claws are so sharp!
Wow…sometimes I look at the answers people give on here and I wonder how they don’t scare people half to death. I wouldn’t worry about your bird having PDFD just because his toenails are growing out long and quickly. Thats rediculous to even suggest something like that and freak someone out.
Older birds toenails sometimes grow outrageously fast. I don’t know why but they do. Could it be because they are not as active and therefore don’t wear down like when they were younger? Maybe. I have a ton of birds….pets and breeders. My older birds toenails grow so quickly it drives me nuts. And in every single cage are sandy and cement perches, three or four to a cage. They still grow no matter what. I hold my bird on my lap and wrap it in a towel and sit on the couch with the lamp next to me turned off. When the bird calms down I turn on the light and snip the ends of a couple toenails of with a pair of fingernail clippers. If they get wound up I turn the light out again until they calm down…and we keep going like that. No matter what you do though, they grow and grow quickly. You just have to find a routine that is easy for you and your bird so you can trim them without a hassle.
