How old is too old to play peek-a-boo?

My son is 2 years old, and he still likes it when I play peek-a-boo with him, but everyone is telling me he is too old for that and I’m making him retarded. Is 2 years old too old for that game?

Please, first of all, congratulate yourself for playing with your son, rather than letting the TV do your job.

Normally peek-a-boo is used to teach the concept of object permanence, meaning that he understands that when something is hidden it still exists.

Your son is enjoying this game because it reaffirms his thought that when your are gone he is capable of loving something that is not there. This will help him overcome the anxiety of the first days of preschool or childcare, and will help him adjust. Playing this game with him will also calm any potential boughts of seperation-anxiety, which a tough thing to handle when you are two years old.

I commend you for playing games in which he himself initiates the play, this shows that he not only enjoys your company, but sees you as a worthy playmate! For a child at this age to be so disconnected with their mother that they don’t even want to play with them is far more detrimental than a child who plays his favorite games.

Perhaps you can try to intoduce a new game that can become his favorite, like every time you unhide your face you can have a new emotion, and then talk about your happy face, sad face, etc. Ask him to make these faces too, introducing the concept of identifing and relating with others. It is a good empathy teaching tool.
