how do i remove water control knob for shower?…the kind i have is just a single knob that you pull out….?

you pull it out to turn the water on then turn it to the left or right to get hotter or colder water. i cant see how to get it off and i need to because it is broken. there is a screw on the cover plate but the cover plate wont come off without first removing the plastic knob. it doesnt appear to me that the knob has a removable face either its just solid. how do i remove this?

in the center there is a plastic cap lossen it with knife or sharp flat head screwdriver
then remove screw it will all come away
