what is YOUR view on keeping a “breeding pair” of dogs???
explosive basset……….thank you, very good answere.
poeple do jump to conclusions dont they, i never said i have a breeding pair of dogs, as i am personally completely against it, i just was curiouse on other peoples views.
explosive basset says it, just as it should be……….and almost what i was going to write too.
Totally pointless, especially if the dogs are purchased as puppies.
There is no way to know as puppies if the dogs will grow up to be suitable mates.
And most breeders do NOT repeatedly breed a b*tch to the same male. Instead they look at the available stud dogs and try to bring in traits that their dogs are missing or weak on. Usually they would only do a repeat breeding if the litter was spectacular and they had a lot of requests from other fanciers for pups from that same pair.
Economically it’s a poor choice too. A stud fee is MUCH cheaper than the cost of purchasing and maintaining a male (particularly if you are showing/trialing him and doing health clearances), especially if you only have one or two b*tches.
When there is such a selection of top-quality males available, there is no excuse for using an inferior dog simply because you happen to own him.

Selective Breeding $76.47 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Selective breeding is the process of breeding plants and animals for particular genetic traits. Typically, strains which are selectively bred are domesticated, and the breeding is sometimes done by a professional breeder. Bred animals are known as breeds, while bred plants are known as varieties, cultigens, or cultivars. The cross of animals results in what is called a crossbreed and crossbred plants are called hybrids. The term selective breeding is synonymous with artificial selection. In animal breeding techniques such as inbreeding, linebreeding and outcrossing are utilized. In plant breeding similar methods are used. Charles Darwin discussed how selective breeding had been successful in producing change over time in his book, Origin of Species. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F.
