Does a macaw need a cage?

someone answered my other question say ing buy him a stand.
would that be ok? A perch to sit on?

I will be getting his wings trimmed because he has a history of flying out the door (into the garage with the door down so I could catch him but I don’t want to take any chances!)
I live in maryland it is usually to cold or hot for a outdoor cage. I also have dogs that are hunting dogs and I have seen them chase birds before. I would never be comfortable leaving them outside with the dogs out there, and I have no where else to put the dogs lol

Yes, get him both. When you are there, he can keep you company on the stand, and when you are not around, put him in a cage for safety – the bigger the better, and fill it with fun toys like ladders, chew toys etc. If you can make or buy one that takes up half a small room, that would be ideal! A smaller cage for sleeping might also be a good idea, so he associates the small cage with sleep time and doesn’t keep trying to play!

If the weather is generally good where you live, you might consider an outdoors cage as well for variety, such as a small aviary or custom built cage. Just make sure there is enough shelter for rain and cold weather – parrots don’t cope well with wind and cold! Otherwise, only put him outside when there is someone home, and bring him in at the first sign of inclement weather!

Parrots are generally very intelligent animals and need plenty of space and stimulation to stop them getting bored. If they are bored, they often pull their feathers out! When you are home, spend as much time with him as you can, and let him travel around with you. If his wings are clipped properly he won’t be able to fly far – generally just enough to land without falling and hurting himself. Keep them trimmed so he can sit on your shoulder while you go about your daily business!
