Gouldian finch questions?

Hi I would like to get a pair of gouldian finches but would like a little feedback. I live in Victoria, Australia and it get a bit cold.
Will they die from the coldness?
How easy do they bred?
What special care do they need thats different to a zebra finch?
Whats a good diet?
Will the straw nesting boxes be fine?
How much should I pay a pair?

Gouldian Finches need to kept at 70 degrees F or more. They don’t tolerate the cold well at all. Also, they need to be housed in at least 50% humidity or you’ll need to buy a humidifier for them. I found an article that will explain the temperature to you in celcius.

Gouldian Finches need to be exposed to natural sunlight each day. If you keep them indoors, use full spectrum artificial lighting to give them the light they need.

Gouldian Finches enjoy eating millet and niger seed. Some greens they enjoy eating are sprouted seeds, spinach, and chickweed. They also need calcium, so make sure they have a cuttlebone or mineral block in their cage at all times. You can also boil an egg and remove the shell, crush the shell, and give it to your Gouldian Finches for calcium.

Gouldian Finches are much more difficult to breed than zebra finches. They need to be on a special diet when breeding, which is a baby-bird hand-feeding formula mixed with seed or egg food. Gouldian Finches often don’t make good parents, and many breeders have Society Finches on hand to help foster the eggs and babies.

Gouldian Finches can nest in a wooden nesting box. You can place dry grass in the nesting box. Gouldian Finches usually lay between 4-6 eggs, and lay one every day. Eggs usually hatch 15-18 days after breeding began. Never disturb a Gouldian Finch’s nest. This can scare the adult Gouldian Finches and they may abandon their nest.

You need a large breeding cage for Gouldian Finches. A cage around 24″ wide 20″ tall, and 16″-18″ deep would be the right size.

Here in the U.S., a pair of Gouldian Finches cost around $150.00-250.00 for a pair. They are much more expensive than zebra or society finches.

Only buy Gouldian Finches if you know you can properly care for them.
