finch, canary, cockatiel, budgie?
I have never owned a bird before and I am thinking about getting one but I don’t know what would be the best bird for me. I like birds that sing and I am not really interested in playing with or holding the bird or taking it out of the cage. I really just want a bird to look at and talk to. I don’t care if the bird talks back though. I have a very lazy pet dog who does nothing and I am sure she would not bother the bird. Are birds very sensitive and scared of other animals? If so then I probably shouldn’t get one because of my dog.
A canary might be the righ tbird for you.
However, these ar not “low maintenance pets”, so beware of what you are getting into!
Most canaries can live to 15-20 years, so this is a long-term commitment!
They need a cage at least 20″ x 20″ x 20″, but this is the absolute minimum! Even with this size cage, you are risking obescity and fatty tumors. Larger is much better, expecially with birds that do not come out of their cages! Personally, I’d go with at least 2 feet cubed, to make sure my bird is happy and healthy! Pease do not buy those ornate brass cages- they can contain heavy metals that are toxic for birds. Also, those pretty round cages are worse then useless- they are dangerous! Birds get their wings caught in them, and they don’t feel safe in a cage without a corner. Also, long cages are better then high cages, because most canaries only use the top half of the cage, and a horizontal rectangular cage will give them more excersize room!
Canaries rarely will accept a pelleted dies, which makes it hard for you, the owner, to make sure they are getting everything they need. They require a high-wuality, fresh seed mix (not that bulk seed stuff, the good kind), a cuttlebone or iodine block, and fresh veggied every day! Favorites are broccolli flrettes, leafy greens like kale, spinach, parsley, and romaine lettuce, and shredded carrot. Clean water should always be available- whic means changing and cleaning the dish at LEAST once a day, twice is better. CANARIES DO NOT NEED GRAVEL, and providing them with it may cause an intestinal blockage. So please, save the grit for chickens and not for your canary!
Canaries also need special perches and toys. Those round dowel perches are terrible- they cause buymble foot and early onset of arthritis. Instead, provide your brid with natural perches (java, cholla, apple wood, etc) that you can buy from your local pet store, or perhaps form out side (make sure it’s pesticice/hrebicide free, that it’s a safe wod for birds, and cook it in your oven for 20 minutes at 250 digrees to kill any bacteria from wild birds). Cotton rope perches are great, too. Sand perches and sand paper covers are NOT GOOD. If you need ot use one (if you are too nervouse to clip the canaries’ nails once a month or so) then get a SandyPerch ™. It’s the only brand of sand-coated perch that I might recommend, and only use it three days out of ten. Toys are also very important- anythign they can pick or peck at are favorites. Birdy pacifiers or anythign with little stings on it are great, as are mirrors. Those snesting material things are good, too, even if your bird is a male, as they enjoy tearin gthem appart. Toys are not optional for nay kind of bird- they are required! You can also offer your canary a nestbox for him to sleep in, if you like. Some canaries will use them ,others will not. If you have a female canary, please do NOT offer a box or nest as it may induce them to lay eggs.
Canaries also need baths, at least once a week but three times aweek is best. A lukewarm mist from a CLEAN (never been used for anything but water) plant sprayer is best.
Canaries also need a yearly vet check, just liek any other pet. If you are unwilling to get your bird to a vet once a year, then perhaps another pet might be a good idea, like a fish.
Canaries are happy-go-lucky birds. They are very pretty, relatively inexpensive, and don’t require handling outside the cage as long as the cage is large enough for flight. They can’t bite like parrots can (even a budgie or cockatiel can give agood nip) and don’t need their feathers trimmed, though their nails do need regular maintenance. They are able to recognize and enjoy interacting with their owners, even if it’s just to exchange a whistle or two. They have very pretty songs, but are fairly quiet- they can live in most apartments. Usually only male canaries sing. A male canary may not sing if there are no other birds in the house, as singing is a territorial and sexual behavior, to scare off rival sand attract a mate. If there is no bird to scare off, and no female to entice, he may not sing as often. There are hundred,s if not thousands, of types of canary. Talking to your local finch enthusiasts group may be a good idea to figure out whatkind you are looking for.
A few common breeds:
Roller
The best singer, in my opinion. These guys aren’t generaly much in looks, varying from brown to yellow, but the males have very pretty songs. I’ve known a few singing female rollers, too.
Fife
The fluffy canaries, ranging in colour from brown to red to orange to yellow. The male Fife’s song is sweet and ismple, but hety are simply gorgeous, and so cute with their chubby cheeks!
Gloster:
Cubby littl ebirds in a variety of colours. Some Glodsters have a funny “crest” on them. Mediocre singers, they are firendly little brids.
Dutch Frill
Breed for thei strange feathers, thse guys look like they stuck a toe in a light socket! They come in many colours, and aren’t really known for thier singing (though, like all canaries, males do), they are interesting birds to look at! I’ve noticed quite afew of these guys have toe-nail probalems, which need regular attention to keep them from twistin gabout and causing foot issues.
Waterslaggers
The ultimate singing canary. These guys sound is indescribable- like runnind water and a flute combined. They range in colour and size, as their main focus is the voice of the male. Many are given “singing instructions” from tapes and recordings, and can learn complicated verses, and create their own. Much more expensive and rare then the above fellas.

Nathaniel Finch $89.22 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Nathaniel Finch (died 1649) was an English lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1640. Finch was related to John Finch, 1st Baron Finch of Fordwich, and bore the same arms as the Finch family of Eastwell. He attended Grays Inn and became a successful London barrister. He was the kings sergeantatlaw and sergeant to Queen Henrietta Maria. In April 1640, Finch was elected Member of Parliament for Sandwich in the Short Parliament. Finchs election was thanks to the support of the Lord Keeper as the mayor and jurats had limited the candidates to those supported by the court. This caused a near riot among the freemen. In about 1642 Finch acquired the manor of Esture in the parish of Chilham, Kent. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F.
