Can a female cockatiel and a male parakeet actually make a fertile egg?
I have a female cockatiel (daisy), male parakeet (danny), and two other female paraketts but I actually caught daisy and danny mating. This was about a couple of weeks ago and today i found a broken egg in the cage. Im not sure if it was fertile or not. So naturally we weren’t prepared so there was no mating box. I really don’t know what to do.
Cockatiels and parakeets aren’t just different species, they’re on opposite sides of the parrot family tree. To put that into perspective, they can’t produce offpsring with one another any more than a horse could produce offspring with a rhino or a lion could produce offspring with a dog. That’s a big difference!
Birds have an instinct to mate, like all animals, but that doesn’t mean you should encourage it. Most female birds actually lay eggs regularly as a part of their natural “cycle”, instead of going into heat or having a period. This is perfectly normal and even birds without mates usually still lay from time to time. If Daisy lays any more eggs, leave them in the cage until you’re sure she’s lost interest, then throw it away. If you remove it while she feels motherly and wants to take care of it she’ll just lay another to replace it, and that will deplete her calcium stores which can make her really sick after a while.
I’d also suggest keeping them in separate cages, if you aren’t already. Birds can get crabby with each other even in the best of circumstances, and parakeets are known to become aggressive when they pair up. What with the size difference and all, keeping them together could be very dangerous. I know a lot of people keep their birds in different cages and just let them play together when they’re being supervised, which is perfectly fine, but letting them live in the same “house” when you aren’t around can be really dangerous. You never know when they’ll have a disagreement, and being in a cage they can’t get away from each other.

Cockatiel $98.77 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus), also known as the Quarrion and the Weiro, is the smallest cockatoo endemic to Australia. They are prized as a household pet and companion parrot throughout the world and are relatively easy to breed. As a caged bird, cockatiels are second only in popularity to the Budgerigar. The cockatiel is the only member of the genus Nymphicus. It was previously considered a crested parrot or small cockatoo; however, more recent molecular studies have assigned it to the Cockatoo subfamily Calyptorhynchinae (commonly known as Dark Cockatoos). It is, therefore, now classified as the smallest of the Cacatuidae (Cockatoo family). Cockatiels are native to the outback regions of inland Australia, and favour the Australian wetlands, scrublands, and bush lands. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Norfolk Parakeet $74.88 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Norfolk Parakeet (Cyanoramphus cookii), also called Tasman Parakeet, Norfolk Island Green Parrot or Norfolk Island Redcrowned Parakeet, is a species of parrot in the Psittacidae family. It is endemic to Norfolk Island (located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia in the Tasman Sea). The species was once considered a subspecies of the Redfronted Parakeet of New Zealand. The name Tasman Parakeet is used by Christidis and Boles on the argument that this species and the Lord Howe Redcrowned Parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae subflavescens) are probably a single species for which they use biogeographical arguments. Tasman is used for other species with the same distribution and they propose that name for that reason. However, the latter subspecies was not included in the genus wide phylogenetic reconstruction using DNA sequences, and the lumping of the species should be considered tentative. Mauritius Parakeet $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Mauritius Parakeet Psittacula eques echo, also known as Echo Parakeet, is the sole survivor of the Psittacula species which inhabited the southern Indian ocean islands near Madagascar. Its local name is katover. Its scientific name change from Psittacula echo had recently found widespread approval. A wealth of circumstantial evidence nowadays suggests that the hypothesized Runion Parakeet (described earlier as Psittacula eques, based on a painting and hearsay reports) did indeed exist. The Runion birds were the closest relatives, and presumably conspecific, with the Mauritius ones. On the other hand, a recent review argued to maintain species status for the time being.
