little black bugs in bird food?
i used to have mice, and every once in a while i would find these little black bugs in it if it sat for a while. now the mouse food was in a plastic bag so i figured the bugs just got in some how. but now i have a cockatieal and 2 budgies and just today i found a bunch of the little black bugs again in the tin where i keep the tiel food. however there were no bugs in the budgies food which is kept in a plastic folgers container…. i had to dump the tiel food and now my teil is going to have to get by on budgie food until the morning. how the hell are these little bugs getting into a sealed aluminum container?
The bugs might have already been in the seed mix when you bought it, or it could have had eggs in in that you could not see, that have since hatched. Do you buy the food in a sealed bag, or do you buy it loose from a bird store? It is much preferable to buy it in a sealed bag, that helps to cut down on problems with bugs etc.
When you get a new bad of seed, put the unopened bag into a ziplock freezer baggie, then put it in the freezer for 48 hours. It will not damage the food (as long as the package is tightly sealed), and the freezing will kill any bugs or eggs. After freezing, when I open the food I transfer it into a ziplock baggie then put it the fridge, to keep it fresher and to avoid anything getting in to it that I don’t want in there! Just remember though to let the food warm up to room temperature before you give it to your birds, as the cold food can upset their stomachs.
