Finch Flight Cage Inquiry?
I am looking into upgrading my finches’ caging setup. Currently I have a pair of Gouldians (and their new chick!) in a 30″ x 18″ x 18″ cage.
If I step up to something like the HQ Flight Cage ( http://www.windycityparrot.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=19302242001&ref=champ ), which is 32″ x 21″ x 35″, I’m assuming I would have to seperate the finches into two cages (one pair in one cage and the third finch in a seperate cage) so that they don’t get into fights, etc.
If I went even bigger to the Model F030 Flight Cage/Aviary ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=5059+10346+5065+13392&pcatid=13392 ), which is 37″ x 27″ x 49″, would this be big enough to accommodate all three of them? Would I have to worry about fighting and/or incestuous breeding?
Any suggestions? Thanks!
Welcome fellow Gould. owner. To keep from having incestuous breeding, watch the beak colors. Seperate the chick from the parents during breeding season, just after the complete moult. Or, keep the males together seperate from the females. That is what I do. I currently have 5 adults and 5 developing eggs.
You can also boil any eggs and not provide nests if you don’t want to breed again. Then you could keep the birds all together. If you go this route, I would get a few more goulds so there isn’t any fighting over “mates.” I’ve been told no less than 6 together in male/female pairs if you are going that route by one breeder. Larraine at Lady Gouldian Finch.com keeps hers seperate except for breeding.
If you don’t want to breed, the Model F030 Flight Cage/Aviary would be my choice. I looked at that one myself!
I have quite a few links on my site that may help you. Good luck deciding!

Selective Breeding $76.47 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Selective breeding is the process of breeding plants and animals for particular genetic traits. Typically, strains which are selectively bred are domesticated, and the breeding is sometimes done by a professional breeder. Bred animals are known as breeds, while bred plants are known as varieties, cultigens, or cultivars. The cross of animals results in what is called a crossbreed and crossbred plants are called hybrids. The term selective breeding is synonymous with artificial selection. In animal breeding techniques such as inbreeding, linebreeding and outcrossing are utilized. In plant breeding similar methods are used. Charles Darwin discussed how selective breeding had been successful in producing change over time in his book, Origin of Species. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Horse Breeding $92.4 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Horse breeding is reproduction in horses, and particularly the humandirected process of selective breeding of animals, particularly purebred horses of a given breed. While feral and wild horses breed successfully without human assistance, planned matings can be used to produce specifically desired characteristics in domesticated horses. Furthermore, modern breeding management and technologies can increase the rate of conception, a healthy pregnancy, and successful foaling. Cooperative Breeding in Mammals $125.85 Cooperative breeding refers to a social system in which individuals other than the parents provide care for the offspring. Since individuals delay breeding and invest in the offspring of others, cooperative breeding poses a challenge to a Darwinian explanation of the evolution of social behavior. The contributors to this book explore the evolutionary, ecological, behavioral, and physiological basis of cooperative breeding in mammals. The book contains a collection of chapters by the leading researchers in the field, and it is the first book dedicated exclusively to the study of mammalian cooperative breeding. Author: Solomon, Nancy G./ French, Jeffrey A. Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 408 Publication Date: 2007/07/01 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.90 inches |

Economic Aspects of Animal Breeding $508.21 This important book covers economic evaluation of genetic differences in animals, determination of breeding goals within an economic context and economic evaluation of breeding programs. During the last 50 years there have been great advances made in the breeding of domesticated animal species. Most of this work has been achieved through the efforts of geneticists, and often the economic goals of such advances have not been clearly evaluated. Economic Aspects of Animal Breeding redresses the balance and provides a much needed synthesis of this most important subject. The book is divided into five sections: basic concepts; economic evaluation of genetic differences; advanced topics in selection indices; economic evaluation of breeding programs, including biotechnological aspects; crossbreeding and heterosis. Author: Weller, J. I./ Weller, Joel Ira Binding Type: Hardcover Number of Pages: 264 Publication Date: 1994/02/28 Language: English Dimensions: 9.50 x 6.36 x 0.73 inches |

Induce Breeding of Labeo Calbasu $111.53 Availability of required quantity of fish seed of desired species is one of the most important pre requisite for successful fish farming. The widely cultured Indian major carps in inland waters like Calbasu (Labeo calbasu) normally do not breed in confined waters. The experiment was conducted to study the induced breeding of Labeo calbasu using synthetic hormone (Ovaprim). Induced Breeding is an artificial scientific technique whereby ripe fish breeders are stimulated by careful and intentional environmental manipulation. Induced breeding required an integrated system unit of different physical and biological facilities. These requirements are possible to fulfill by establishing a hatchery. Therefore, it is essential to develop the breeding technology of Labeo calbasu through proper dose optimization of synthetic hormone treatment for future development.
