Backyard bird/squirrel shooting in california?

Is it legal to shoot birds or squirrels in one’s backyard in California??
I’ve searched about the laws but I can’t find them
oh and I use a break barrel pellet rifle

first, it is illegal to discharge any firearm in the city limits. Same is true for air guns. Second, killing certain non game birds is illegal in the state. Next, never kill an animal that you are not going to eat. It is not ethical. Unless it is a pest animal that is dangerous, or destructive. When I lived in the peoples republic of kalifornia, I used to set up a heavy backstop at the end of a long hallway in my house, set up a paper target in a pellet trap and shoot down the hall with my bb or pellet guns. Technically I was breaking the law. But since no one knew, and the pop of the airgun couldn’t be heard outside my house………..LOL
