My male Parakeet Died What is the Cause of his Death?

My male Parakeet Rocky died 3 day shy of his one year birthday, My dad found him at the bottom of the cage, when the female Parakeet Aqua was frantically squawking. My dad then found Rocky at the bottom of the cage face down. There was no blood, fluids or discharge of any kind on or around him. Does anyone have any idea of how he could have died? I plan on taking the remaining Parakeet Aqua to an avian specialist to make sure she isn’t ill as well. They both did not and do not have any type of flea, mite, or fungus. Their diet consists of a Parakeet Bird Food Mix of seeds and vitamins. They haven’t consumed any food that is toxic to birds nor have they to my knowledge been exposed to anything toxins that could be inhaled.
Do you also have any suggestions on keeping Aqua healthy and healthier? We took precautions and disinfected the cage and toys with antibacterial soap and water.

I’m so sorry for your loss. It is never easy to deal with the death of a beloved pet; it is even harder when you have no idea why they died.

I agree with the person who recommended a necropsy on the dead bird – that may be the only way to find out what killed him.

I disagree with the person who said parakeets need grit – just the opposite is true. Many studies have shown that grit is totally unnecessary for parakeets, as they shell their seeds before eating them. Too much grit can actually cause impactions.
